Ric Bucher Rips Plain Dealer and Brian Windhorst’s Reportage
For the longest time, we thought Brian Windhorst’s only enemies were David Lee Morgan Jr. and approximately two-thirds of the LeBrontourage. But add ESPN’s resident Kobe honk Ric Bucher to the list, after he made some bold accusations regarding the PD’s round-the-clock comprehensive team coverage of the Joe Smith blockbuster acquisition.
Brian Windhorst was all over the story from the get-go (and Branson Wright subsequently linked to it in his famous “Starting Blocks” column). But Ric Bucher was not impressed when he appeared on Bill Simmons’ Subway East Fresh Podcast:
“The Plain Dealer came out and said very early on that Joe Smith was going to the Cavs, but I know as early as yesterday that there was a chance it could have come apart and he could have been headed to the Lakers… it got a little contentious… at the end of the day does the Plain Dealer look wrong…? No, because he ended up there, but were they completely on the beam… maybe not?”
I know what you’re thinking: “Bill Simmons did a podcast without Jack-O?” Aside from that, there’s no doubt that Bucher is taking a veiled shot at Windy. He has owned the Cavs coverage for three years now; he even broke the Mo Williams trade story from his hospital bed. He’s been the go to guy for all things LeBron, even though James isn’t doing one-on-ones these days with anyone that hasn’t overcome the HIV virus. The one interesting nugget buried in the clip is that the Lakers might have had interest at some point in the messianic figure known as Joe Smith. Perhaps Windhorst will join us on our next podcast and straighten things out. We’ll even settle for David Lee Morgan Jr. at this point, but that’s only if we’re permited to issue Amber Alerts for missing writers.

I must say I think this is all about sex. Bucher knows no matter how much he tans and works on his hair, Simmons, ESPN and all the groupies that come with those two entities are going to be sloppily trying to rape the stud that is Brian Windhorst. Bucher, deal with it already. Savannah’s babies’ daddy is BW fa sho.
Can’t say I disagree with anyone here.
Anyone want to join my alliance and help me vote Rossitron off the CurseldCleveland Island?
“even though James isn’t doing one-on-ones these days with anyone that hasn’t overcome the HIV virus.”That one had me giggling.Hasn’t Simmons praised Windhorst in the past as being one of the best NBA beat writers? Not that I expect him to get all indignant with Bucher for taking a shot, but I think Simmons is a BW fan to some extent.
Bucher, what about your buddy Steven A Smith? How about cleaning up your own house before calling out someone else?
this is so ridiculous. first of all, windhorst was right, so who cares?? why use this example to illustrate a point about the growing problem of media outlets being wrong because they want to get out in front of others? if it’s such a problem, how about using one of the “many” actual examples out there? maybe — just maybe — windhorst’s access is better than bucher’s when the cavs are involved. maybe fegan went to the lakers just to see what market value was — which windhorst could see through and bucher could not because bucher’s crying that he — HE! — is the bastion of NBA journalism. this is just so asinine that bucher would throw someone who’s genuinely good, really cares, and is rarely ever misleading under the bus just to pontificate. man, i really do hate the guy.
Ric Bucher was told by his LA people they were trying to land Joe Smith. Bucher thinks LA had a chance, when they didn’t. BW was right along, because he was gettin real information that was transpiring. Bucher was getting bullshit!
When’s the last time David Lee Morgan broke a story?
Are you aware that Tom Ziller wrote a very similar piece at NBA Fanhouse today? Don’t know if it was just a coincidence or who published first…
