Browns Replacement For Winslow: Pass Catching Tackle

Posted on March 05, 2009 by C.C. Webmaster

BEREA  – So he may not be considered a “soldier” or even an “average football player,” but Robert Royal is the official replacement for All-Pro tight end Kellen Winslow.  This isn’t exactly the big “splash” most Browns fans were probably hoping for during the free agency bonanza.

The book on Royal is only three pages long that he is a blocking tight end. Let’s face it, K-2 would rather receive care at the Cleveland Clinic than actually open up a hole for a running back. The Browns anemic offense actually seemed to be humming at less embarrassing levels when Winslow was out of action early in the season.  Steve Heiden filled in admirably aginst the Giants and the Jaguars, actually creating  holes for the running game.

Who knows what this means for Martin Rucker.  Last year’s fourth-round selection only caught two passes the entire season and was only active for five total games.  With Heiden coming off a torn ACL/MCL, it could be a hotly contested battle for snaps at tight end. Unfortunately any coach will tell you,  the last thing you want heading into a football season is a tight end controversy.

Is there an Ohio State tight end that purposely faltered at the combine so that the Browns could take him (or her) in a later round with all the other fake-underachieving Buckeyes?

    Not enuff ebonics.

Hey! Here’s another reason not to watch the Browns this season…….or in ebonics “stuped motha fucka’s”

  4. embarrassedbrownsfan says:

I’m watching his video right now…and I can’t evem understand him……but I think he said soldier somewhere in there.

Ok, this is a legitimate post. I’m just confused as to why a team with the worst red zone offense (where tight ends are supposed to flourish) trades away one of the best recieving tight ends….Oh ya, because Kokinis wants to establish the run. Honestly, I am all about it. In the AFC North the only way to even be contenders is to run the ball. But they want to establish the run with Jamal Lewis??? A running back averaging three yards last season? I head what I assume are BS rumors about the Browns trying to get LT to Cleveland, and if they are true then GO Browns! Othrwise this “commitment to the run” is just another half-assed attempt to commit to the run so us poor dumb fans will let this regime last a few years.
